Referee
Meet with all officials prior to swim meet to explain rules, duties, regulations, etc.; is final authority on questioned calls or questions about rules. Referees are REQUIRED to attend a GKAISA Stroke and Rules Clinic.
Deck Referee

Starter
On signal from Head Timer, the starter assumes full control for the swimmers; announces events and distance to swimmers and timers; starts event with a starting pistol or horn. Starters are REQUIRED to attend a GKAISA Stroke and Rules Clinic.
Head Timer
Will signal starter when all timers are ready; will start watch on each event and serve as the back-up timer.
Stroke and Turn Judge
Judge proper execution of strokes, turns and touches; be consistent and positive, do not call an infraction unless you are positive you saw one; raise hand in air for DQ runner; record event #, lane #, infraction and signature. All stroke and turn judges must be CERTIFIED by attending a GKAISA Stroke and Rules Clinic and taking the written exam or hold a current USA Swimming Stroke Judge certificate.
Timer
One timer per lane; start watch on starting flash, not the sound; verify that your watch has started; call for back-up if needed; stop watch when any part of swimmer’s body touches the wall; read watch; tell time to scribes; reset watch and signal Head Timer that you are ready for the next event. DO NOT look at times displayed on scoreboard... only record the time that is on your watch. If you missed the start or finish, write the discrepancy down on the event card and let the head timer know.
Scribe/Pickle Operator
Assist timers; hold cards; verify swimmer’s name with name on card; record time on swimmer’s card; hold up card for time card runner’s; operate the backup pushbutton (called a pickle) to the timing pad.
Jump Judge
One on each corner of pool; call all 6 lanes; make sure one swimmer touches wall before next one jumps in; swimmer on the block can be in motion as long as his feet are still in contact with the block. You and the judge opposite you must both agree that you saw an infraction before you can call it. Record event #, lane #, and signature.
Finish Judge
One on each side of pool; call all 6 lanes (which lane finishes first, second, etc.); record event #, and lanes in order of finish (lane 7 is exhibition). If both judges agree, this is an official finish, if they disagree, use overcall judge. Record your signature on the cards.
Card Sorter
Receive all time cards and judging slips from the deck. Sort lane cards and all judges slips; staple DQ’s to proper lane card; place swimmers in order of finish and clip all papers together by event #; pass on to card reader. Responsible for correctly ordering all event cards and judge slips for proper storage after the meet.
